Editing Workshop for Music Videos

Today one of teachers talked to us about how to best edit a music video whether it be a band or a solo artist. He told us that there were some rules of cutting music videos:

1. Listen to the music and illustrate what you hear.

2. Group your shots together. Or else it would look too random.

3. Follow movement.

One of the things that they told us that we need to do was start off with the performance cut of the editing process and then move on to the narrative part of the music video. Then after everything had been edited together we should then focus on adding any effects to the video and then sort out the colouring of the video at the end of the editing process. He also told us what the reason behind the clapper board was for in music videos and it is basically there to make sure that the music and the band are able to sync up so it looks like they are actually singing in the music video. Another tip that he gave us to make sure that we didn't get too confused was to rename the clips in the timeline instead of in the bins and when you rename a clip try and describe the shot going from the left to the right of the shot and not to use the peoples name when renaming as this can also confuse people in your group or even yourself if you forget the peoples names. We were also taught that if we can't use the clapper board to sync up the music and the band we can use the snare drums on both of the music videos that have been added before the song to get an idea of the tempo of the song and also to try and sync up the band and the music.
